Fall Semester

More than 25 brothers laid out our goals and vision for the fall semester at a fall brotherhood retreat. The weekend concluded with the playing of the 2nd annual Delt Masters puttputt tournament where Ryan Gaffarian ran away with the green jacket, winning by three strokes.

A new bylaw stated that all members of the fraternity must complete six hours of community service during the fall semester. To complete the hours, brothers attended events sponsored by community service clubs, such as Circle K and The Detroit Partnership or campus philanthropy events like SAE Mud Bowl, Chi O Wing Fling, and 5K charity runs. The chapter plans to work with the Gordie Foundation to educate underclassmen on the dangers of alcohol and hazing.

Last semester, Matt Francis took over responsibility of the Greek-wide bowling league from alumnus Will Doyle. Recently the Delt Bowling Team was crowned champions of the league, beating out Fiji and two Phi Psi teams in the year-end round-robin tournament.

New this year was the introduction of the Delt hockey team. Championed by brothers Matt Clark and Nick Bolz, the Delt hockey team plays in the men’s D1 league at the Ann Arbor Ice cube. After a rough start, losing their first seven games, the addition of recently inducted Gabe Egan and Daren Cunningham the team went on to win seven games in a row, moving from last place to a playoff berth.

Winter Semester

Winter semester brought introduction of the Sober-Bro Program, where a designated brother will remain sober throughout the night and be available to shuttle guests home from the Shelter. The program will run Thursday through Saturday, 11 pm to 3 am.

Our intramural Dodge Ball team reached the finals of the school-wide tournament; however, we unfortunately lost in the finals in a very close match. This has been the first time in several years that we have participated in this sport.

On the night of the Super Bowl game, we had a social event with Chi Omega sorority; girls of the sorority came over to our house to watch the game on our new projector, and we provided plenty of food and soft drinks for the girls.

In recruitment, we gained 9 new pledges to our fraternity. They are all great gentlemen and they will all make a fine addition to our brotherhood. We had a couple of brotherhood events with them this month; for one, we went sledding in the Arboretum, which was a lot of fun. Then we had a brotherhood dinner where we cooked macaroni and cheese for the brothers who attended. Finally, we had a big brother ceremony near the end of the month. This ceremony is where the little brothers are assigned their big brothers.  After the ceremony, the big and little brothers teamed up to play laser-tag.

In philanthropy, we organized an event in the beginning of the month where a few brothers went to Bryant Community Center in the suburbs of Ann Arbor to aid the staff and organize their workspace. This community center helps educate and entertain kids. It was a good experience for the brothers who attended and the staff said that they could use our help again in the future, making the community center a place where brothers could regularly go to help the community. Also, our philanthropy chair, arranged a fund raiser dinner at Mongolian Barbeque, a well-known restaurant in town. The event will be held on March 11. We are selling tickets to all those that wish to attend the dinner and the money we raise will be going to the American Cancer Society.

In education, quite a few of our brothers attained the Kershner Scholar Award for a GPA of 3.3 or better. Also noteworthy, is the fact that some of the older brothers have started to regularly host study tables which is attended by younger students and pledges so that they can study together and receive some tutoring and tips from older brothers.

Finally, in Greek Week activities, we have been paired up with Alpha Phi sorority and Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. The Greek Week activities will take place between March 15 and March 20.  Our sing and variety teams are already looking very strong.
